Named after the remote Norwegian archipelago deep within the Arctic Circle, Svalbard is an exploration of landscape, light and atmosphere.
Inspired by snow-covered islands and frozen seas, the table transforms natural phenomena into a sculptural piece of furniture. A large, organically textured cast-glass inlay emerges from a vast surface of pristine white HI-MACS®, echoing the fractured ice formations and frozen coastlines that define one of the world’s most extraordinary environments.
Minimal in form yet rich in detail, Svalbard celebrates the quiet beauty of the Arctic landscape.
Light Beneath the Ice
As daylight fades, the table reveals another layer of its character. Hidden beneath the cast glass is a carefully diffused LED lighting system that gently illuminates the textured surface from below.
Soft colours transition through subtle hues, recreating the atmosphere of the Aurora Borealis across the Arctic sky. The lighting can cycle continuously through a programmed sequence or pause on a single colour to suit the mood of the space.
Where Art Meets Engineering
Svalbard combines artistic expression with thoughtful engineering. The cast-glass inlay is seamlessly integrated into the HI-MACS® structure, while the concealed lighting system, integrated controls and hidden electronics preserve the clean architectural lines of the design.
Two discreet push-to-open drawers provide practical storage, while a matching concealed access panel allows maintenance of the lighting system when required. Flush HI-MACS® control buttons allow the table to be switched on and off, and the lighting sequence paused, without interrupting the purity of the form.
Discreet power connections on either side of the table maximise flexibility within a room. Every technical detail is designed to disappear, allowing the atmosphere created by the illuminated glass to remain the focus.
Handmade in England
Each Svalbard table is individually handcrafted to order in England using HI-MACS®, cast glass and integrated LED technology, before being meticulously hand-finished to a refined semi-gloss sheen. Every edition is individually numbered and carries the Stuart Melrose studio mark.
Electrical specifications can be adapted for international use, allowing the piece to be commissioned worldwide. Produced as a limited edition of 300, Svalbard blurs the boundary between contemporary furniture, lighting and sculpture.
The original signed prototype, featuring a completely unique one-off cast-glass panel created for Stuart Melrose’s first solo museum exhibition, is also available.
