Little Living Furniture: When Furniture Comes to Life
Children have a wonderful ability to see life where adults often see only objects. A chest of drawers can become a friendly giant, a cupboard might hide a secret world, and even the simplest piece of furniture can develop its own personality through imagination.
Little Living Furniture was created to celebrate that way of seeing the world. Developed in collaboration with the London textile collective Puff & Flock, the collection explores the idea that furniture can become part of childhood itself: encouraging imagination, storytelling and play while remaining beautifully crafted and genuinely useful.
Designing for Growing Imaginations
Children’s bedrooms are asked to perform many roles. They are places to sleep, play, read, learn and dream, often within a small space.
Rather than treating furniture as purely functional, Stuart Melrose designed a family of playful pieces that work together to transform a room into an environment that feels imaginative, welcoming and full of character.
The ambition was to create furniture that children would love, while giving parents pieces that are equally enjoyable to live with.
Personality Through Design
Every piece in the collection has its own character. The Little Guy appears to float effortlessly against the wall, becoming a curious companion rather than simply a set of drawers.
Phil Me In, a playful chest of drawers, and Medusa, an expressive cupboard, continue the idea that everyday furniture can have personality without sacrificing practicality.
Subtle proportions, playful details and carefully considered forms invite the viewer’s imagination to complete the story. The result is a collection that feels animated without becoming cartoon-like.
A Creative Collaboration
Little Living Furniture was developed with Puff & Flock, the London textile collective founded by graduates of Central Saint Martins. Their work combines textiles, material research, fine art and interactive design.
Puff & Flock brought a tactile dimension to the project through handcrafted upholstered elements that complemented Stuart’s furniture designs. Together, the collaboration combined contemporary furniture design with richly textured handmade fabrics to create pieces that feel warm, playful and inviting.
The prototypes were handcrafted using solid oak, vibrant lacquered panels and individually upholstered textile details. Natural timber provides warmth and longevity, while the carefully selected colours bring a sense of fun to the clean contemporary forms.
Crafted for Play and Remembered
The Little Living Furniture collection was exhibited at Designersblock in London before featuring in Stuart Melrose’s first solo museum exhibition at the Willis Museum. The project also attracted international design press, introducing it to audiences around the world.
The collection demonstrates that children’s furniture can be every bit as thoughtful, beautifully made and design-led as furniture for adults. It begins with a simple question: what if furniture could become a child’s friend?
