Glacier began with a deceptively simple question: could a solid table appear to be divided in two while remaining visually seamless?
The ambition was to create a bold architectural form interrupted by a crystal-clear section, as though ice were carving its way through solid rock. Rather than simply adding a transparent material, the challenge was to make the acrylic feel naturally integrated into the design without revealing how the piece was constructed.
The result is a table that celebrates simplicity, precision and restraint.
A Study in Seamless Construction
A substantial block of crystal-clear acrylic passes directly through the centre of Glacier, yet no visible fixings, brackets or mechanical connections interrupt its clean geometry.
From every angle, the transition between the HI-MACS® and transparent acrylic remains deliberately understated, allowing the table to read as a single sculptural object rather than an assembly of separate components.
Achieving this illusion required extensive experimentation with seamless bonding techniques, combining precision manufacturing with meticulous hand finishing.
Nature, Material and Form
The table takes its name from the dramatic way glaciers carve through the landscape. Like ice cutting through rock, the transparent acrylic appears to divide the table into two distinct masses while also connecting them.
The contrast between the soft, diffused HI-MACS® surface and the crystal clarity of the acrylic creates a visual tension that changes with both light and viewpoint. Strong linear forms, crisp chamfered edges and balanced proportions give Glacier a confident architectural presence, while its transparent centre introduces an unexpected sense of lightness.
Contemporary Craftsmanship
Each Glacier table is individually handcrafted to order in England using HI-MACS® solid surface material and a substantial bonded acrylic insert. Every edition is hand-finished to a refined semi-gloss sheen, individually numbered and marked with the Stuart Melrose studio logo.
Glacier has been exhibited at leading UK design exhibitions, including 100% Design – Futures and the Liverpool Design Show, attracting international attention for its innovative construction and striking visual simplicity.
