Mont Fort Sideboard & Tortin Table: From Mountain to Form

The Mont Fort Sideboard and Tortin Table continue Stuart Melrose's exploration of material, form and graphic expression, developing the manufacturing techniques first explored through the Cirrus Table.

Created following six months spent living and snowboarding in Verbier, Switzerland, both pieces are named after two of the resort's most iconic mountain runs. Rather than directly reproducing the landscape, the collection captures the experience of moving through it: changing gradients, sculpted moguls and sweeping descents are abstracted into bold geometric forms.

A flowing graphic traces the imagined paths carved into the mountainside by skiers and snowboarders, transforming the energy and movement of the slope into a sculptural furniture collection.

Exploring Movement Through Design

The Mont Fort and Tortin collection represents another important technical development within Stuart's work.

Having previously explored carrying intricate inlays across complex sculptural surfaces, these pieces pushed the process further by allowing the inlaid graphic to leave the object entirely before seamlessly returning to it. Suspended momentarily in space, the graphic echoes the fleeting airborne moments experienced by riders launching from the mountain before reconnecting with the snow.

The result is furniture where decoration is no longer confined by the object's surface. Instead, the graphic becomes an active structural element, creating movement, rhythm and a sense of energy that transforms each piece into a frozen moment of motion.

From Material Experiment to Limited Edition

Handcrafted in England from two seamlessly bonded colours of DuPont™ Corian®, each piece is individually produced to order and finished by hand to a soft semi-gloss sheen.

The collection combines precision engineering with expressive form. The inlaid graphic becomes a permanent part of the furniture, moving across and beyond the surface while maintaining the clean, uninterrupted lines of the overall design.

Every edition is numbered and carries the Stuart Melrose studio mark, with bespoke colour combinations and commissioned variations available upon request.

Two Sculptural Interpretations

The Tortin Table explores the collection's ideas within a compact sculptural form. Its clean geometry provides a striking contrast to the dynamic inlaid graphic, which appears to leap effortlessly beyond the table before rejoining its surface. The balance between precision engineering and expressive movement creates a piece that functions equally as furniture and sculpture.

The Mont Fort Sideboard expands the same design language into a larger architectural statement. The flowing graphic stretches across the full width of the cabinet, allowing the inlay to interact with the furniture's sculptural form while maintaining clean, uninterrupted lines.

Internally, adjustable shelving, matching high-pressure laminate interiors and concealed push-open doors and drawers ensure that practicality is achieved without compromising the purity of the design. As standard, discreet rear cable management allows the piece to function equally well as a media unit, while bespoke configurations can be created to suit individual interiors.
